How to use the Legacy Cloud Backup

What is the Legacy Cloud Backup?

The Legacy Cloud Backup is a new way to keep your data safe if the worst was to happen and your Legacy file was deleted/lost.  This is a backup system that will allow you to backup your data file to a secure server here at Legacy.  This backup system will allow you to backup one copy of your file to our servers and restore from it at any time.  The Legacy Cloud Backup is FREE so you do not have to pay a monthly fee for cloud storage but to keep the Legacy Cloud Backup free you can only backup your data file.  If you have media it is still a good idea to backup your data and media off your computer onto an external drive or CD.

Creating a Legacy Cloud backup account:

To create a cloud backup open Legacy and go to file>backup file.  You should see a screen similar to what I have below.  Click the Manage Account link.

This will bring up the following screen where you can sign into your Legacy Cloud account or if you do not have a Legacy Cloud account yet you can click "Click here to register for a Legacy Cloud Account".  This will open your internet browser and take you to our Legacy Cloud registration form.  If you would like a direct link to the registration form click here.  Please keep in mind that the web portal for the Legacy Cloud does not work with Internet Explorer.  If you see a blank screen when you click to register try using a different internet browser (Google Chrome, Firefox or Microsoft Edge).  If the problem still occurs using a different internet browser please try clearing your cache/cookies and try again.  Once you register you will receive a confirmation email with a link to verify your email address.  If you do not see this link please check your spam/junk folder.

Once you are registered enter your email and password that you used to register with and click save login.  This will save your login so the next time you backup to or restore from the cloud you do not need to login again.

How to restore from the Legacy Cloud or manage your Legacy Cloud backups:

To restore from the Legacy Cloud go to file>restore file and choose from the cloud as depicted in the picture below.

If you are prompted to log in please enter your email and password you registered with.  You should now see the screen as depicted below.

Click on the backup you want to restore from and click restore at the bottom.  If you wish to delete a backup you can also do that on this screen.  Select the backup you want to delete and click the options button at the bottom and choose "delete selected backup.

How To change your Legacy Cloud Backup account password:

1.  Go to this site: https://www.legacyfamilytree.cloud/resetpassword

2.  Enter your email and hit submit

3.  A new email will be sent to that email address you entered with a password reset code.

4.  Click the link in the email and you will be taken to a form were you can set a new password.

If you have any trouble registering or using the Cloud backup for any reason please email support@legacyfamilytree.com and let us know the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q.  Is the Legacy Cloud Backup Secure?

A.  Yes, Nobody else has access to your Legacy Cloud backups but you with your email and password login.  Make sure you keep this login safe as it is the only way to access the Legacy Cloud Backup system.

Q.  Does the Legacy Cloud Backup allow me to backup media?

A.  No, to keep the Legacy Cloud backup service free we had to limit the amount of stuff you can backup and media can be very large in size so we only allow users to backup their data file.

Q.  How many backups can I create on the Legacy Cloud?

A.  You can only create one backup per family file.  So every time you backup the same file it will overwrite the previous backup.

Q.  Can I use the same Legacy Cloud Backup account on more than one computer?

A.  Yes, so long as you have your Legacy Cloud Backup login email and password you can access your Legacy Cloud Backup system from any computer with Legacy 9 or later installed.

Q.  Can I use the Legacy Cloud Backup to move a file between computers or use it to access the same file from more than one computer?

A.  Yes you can use the Legacy Cloud Backup to move a file between computers but it was never designed to do this.  The Legacy Cloud Backup system was designed to give users a secure online backup that they can access at anytime using Legacy.  If you do choose to use the Legacy Cloud Backup to move your files between two computers or update the file between two computers make sure you understand that every time you backup the same file it will overwrite the previous backup.  So if you are not careful you may overwrite a newer backup with an older one.  Instead of using the Legacy Cloud Backup for this I highly recommend using Drop Box or another Cloud drive to store your file on and access between two computers.  Here is our guide on Legacy and Drop Box.
