The size limit to a PDF file is maybe about 10 GB. How many pages that is depends on many factors: page setup, use of color, number of scanned images and their type and size, inclusion of charts, etc. But the real problem with extremely large PDF files is that you may be taxing your system and printer resources. Generating extremely large PDF files can result in corruption problems where you lose the entire document. Pictures are the biggest problem. With Legacy, somewhere around 100 pictures taxes the abilities of many computers. For example, a Legacy user creates a PDF file which is over 30 MB and has some 4,300 pages. The PDF reader only displays the first 1000 pages and many pictures are missing, and starting with page 1001 it displays empty pages.
Also consider that when you get to extremely large sizes, you limit the usefulness of your PDF document. Getting more memory and a bigger hard drive might not be the answer because you might be the only one who can open the thing. So the practical answer is a much lower than the limit in terms of size. It may help to picture in your mind a single volume of some 4,300 pages (or whatever) sitting on a bookshelf in a library. Is that really practical? Probably not. No print shop on earth could print and bind a single volume that large. (Please see 'Is there a PDF size limit?' at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1041350 )
TIPS:
• Consider recreating your PDF book in separate, smaller volumes. • Make certain that you are using the newest version of Adobe Acrobat to read your PDF file.
