The Census Search in Legacy 7.5 reached by clicking Search on the menu bar and selecting Find to open the Search window. Or you can click on the Search icon. In the current version of Legacy go to Search and click on Census List. You can also access it by clicking on Find and then the Census List tab. Next select the Census Search tab. Here are some Census Search guidelines that may help:

  1. If you're not seeing the Census List tab in the Search window, please update to the latest build of Legacy.
  2. Do a Check/Repair of your family file. Click on File on the menu bar and select File Maintenance > Check/Repair and proceed with the repair. If any error messages occur during the Check/Repair process, click No in the error message box so that the repair steps can finish.  Do Check/Repair twice if errors are found.
  3. The Census Search uses your Master Location List for the way you enter places for people. If you have six variations for Massachusetts in your Master Location List (for example MA, MASS, Mass., Massachettes, Masachusetts and Massachusetts), the Census Search would only find people with the variation "Mass." if “Mass." is what you entered in place field. Please do a Master Location List Clean Up to standardize all your places names and combine variations. You can view a free online demonstration by visiting http://www.millenniacorp.com/_videos/12step/12_step__preview.html.
  4. Sometimes more is less. You can put too much information in the place field. Suppose you enter “Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States” in the place name field. This may be too restrictive. Your chances of finding everyone will increase if you enter only “Boston.” Doing a Master Location List Clean Up will, of course, will also solve this problem.
  5. Avoid using abbreviations, like “NY” for New York, in your Master Location List. If you search for NY, the Census Search will find any person who uses a place with the letter combination “ny”, as in Allegheny or Sunnyside, etc.
  6. The Census Search not only uses places listed for peoples’ births, deaths and marriages (vital events), it also uses places listed in peoples’ custom events, such as Military Service, Residence, Census, Land, etc.
