Convert - How to convert a Family File to the new version

Author: Reference Number: AA-00373 Views: 20151 Created: 2013-11-08 11:56 AM Last Updated: 2016-06-01 10:01 AM 0 Rating/ Voters

The first time you open a Family File in a newer version of Legacy that was last worked on in a past version you will see a message to the effect that the file is an older format that needs to be converted because of new features. Simply click Yes and the conversion will take place.

There is no backwards compatibility. A Family File opened in a newer version cannot be opened in an older version of the program without first creating a GEDCOM in the current version and importing that gedcom into the earlier version.

There are rarely any problems doing the file conversion, but here are some steps to take to ensure no data is lost:

1. Before upgrading to a newer version of Legacy, run File Maintenance on the family file in your older version of Legacy. Click on File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair.

2. While still in the older version of Legacy, back up the Family File(s) by going to File > Backup Family File.

If you didn't do these steps, the chances are very good that nothing bad will happen and the file conversion to the new format will be error free. If something does happen, contact Technical Support email to Support@LegacyFamilyTree.com or by using the Problem Report form at
