Cut, Copy and Paste
The Windows clipboard provides temporary storage space for
information you want to transfer from one place to another. You can place
information onto the clipboard from one location in Legacy and then later paste
it into another location. You can also use the clipboard to copy or move
information to other programs. Information placed on the clipboard remains
there until you clear it or place a new piece of information there. Because the
information remains on the clipboard, you can paste it into new locations as
often as you like.
To Cut or Copy Text
Select the information you want to remove from its current location
by dragging the mouse pointer over the text while holding down the left mouse
button.
When the desired text is highlighted, release the mouse
button.
To Cut the text, press CTRL+X. The selected text disappears
and is placed on the Windows clipboard.
To Copy the text, press CTRL+C. The selected text remains in
place and a copy is placed on the Windows clipboard.
To Paste Text
You can paste information from the Windows clipboard into any other
place you can enter text.
Specify the place where you want the information from the
Windows clipboard
to appear.
This can be done in one of two ways:
1. Place the insertion point if you want to add the information from
the Windows clipboard.
or
2. Select the text you want to replace with the contents from the
Windows clipboard
Press CTRL-V. The text on the Windows clipboard is copied to
the current insertion point as if you typed it in at the keyboard. The
information on the Windows clipboard remains there and can be pasted again in
other locations if desired.
Note: If you copy formatted text - text that has additional
formatting other than bolding, italicizing, and superscripting - and paste it
into a Legacy note, the formatting will probably show up initially in the Legacy
text box but it will be lost when the notes are saved. When you reload the
note, the additional formatting will be gone (or in some cases, some extraneous
coding may still appear and will have to be removed manually). Legacy currently
only supports bolding, italicizing, and superscripting.
Problems
When doing a copy and paste into a small field that is just a single line tall, sometimes it is helpful to use an intermediate program like Notepad to make sure that you are not inadvertently including invisible carriage returns when copying, which will cause problems when you paste.
There are instances where closing and reopening Legacy fixed the problem.
Some users are not able to copy and paste from from an Internet web page using Google Chrome, but when they use Internet Explorer they are able to copy and paste.
There are parts of Legacy where paste is not appropriate for data entry and those areas will not recognize the CTRL-V paste command. Copy and Paste should always work in Notes, Comments and other free-form text fields but will not work where the value in a field is drawn from an associated table.
There are also custom user settings that can cause a screen not to work right, including cut and paste.
1. Please click on Options on the menu bar and select Customize. Next, click the Reset to Defaults button at the bottom of the screen, confirm the reset and then Save. Often this is all that you need to do to fix the cut and paste problem. You will, however, loose some customized settings, such as screen colors and personalized font settings. These things will have to be reset.
2. Close Legacy and open your Document folder and browse into the Legacy Family Tree folder and delete the _AppData folder.
3. Replace the folder you deleted by downloading the update by visiting http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp. Be sure to temporarily disable your internet security program(s) as some of these will cause serious problem for Legacy.
Please let me know how it goes. Sometimes you have to do a clean re-installation of Legacy to clear a copy and paste problem.
