Relationship Calculator

The Relationship Calculator is only available in the Legacy Deluxe Edition.  To unlock the Deluxe Edition features in the Legacy Standard Edition, please call 1 800 753-3453 or visit the Online Store to order and receive the new Deluxe Edition Customer ID Number.

The Relationship Calculator requires two different individuals to be selected; one on the left and one on the right. When the calculator is first opened, the person on the left is automatically filled in with the current person from the Family or Pedigree View. The person’s name, birth and death information is shown in the box at the lower-left corner of the window. If this person is one of the individuals you want to use, all you then need to do is select the person on the right side of the calculator. If you want to change the person on the left, click the Select Left button and choose from the Name List. If you want to select a person using their RIN number, right-click on the Select Left button and indicate the RIN to load. Next, select a person for the right side. Again, this can either be done by clicking the Select Right button and choosing from the Name List or by right-clicking the Select Right button and entering a RIN.

The Relationship Calculator is reached from the Tools menu by selecting Relationship Calculator....

Swapping Places

Legacy calculates how the person on the left is related to the person on the right. In the case of cousins this will always be the same either way. However, with more lineal relationships, such as grandparents and grandchildren or aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces, the left-right position has an effect on the outcome. You can change the positions by clicking the Swap button. Doing so automatically recalculates the relationship without having to click the Calculate Relationships button again.

Calculate the Relationship

Once both sides are filled, click the Calculate Relationship button. Legacy then starts the process of checking for common ancestors. Two people are always related by finding a common ancestor. (Sometimes on of the two people is the common ancestor as in a mother and daughter, or grandfather and grandson.) Depending on the size of your family file this process can take a while. Two people can be related in many different ways by going up through all the lines of accent. For example, if you have lines that go back into European royalty, two people can be related in thousands of different ways. While Legacy is working it shows the current generations being checked at the middle-right and -left of the screen. This can give some indication of how long the process will be. On smaller family files the process is very fast.

Common Ancestors

When Legacy completes the analysis, all the common ancestors found are displayed in the Common Ancestors box at the top of the window. They are ordered in closeness of relationship with the closest at the top. The top line is highlighted and the relationship through this common ancestor is displayed in the upper-right corner.

Descent from Common Ancestor

Below the Common Ancestors box are two more boxes titled Descent from Common Ancestor. These two boxes list the direct line descendants from the highlighted common ancestor down to the selected individuals. If there is more than one common ancestor in the top box, highlighting each one changes the descent display in the boxes below.
