Error 9 - Subscript out of range

There are various causes for this error. Often all you have to do is restart and the Error 9 will not repeat. If Error 9 continues to be a problem:

1.Please update your Legacy program:

LEGACY: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp

LEGACY 8 OR EARLIER: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00899 and download the final revision (build) of your version. You may also wish to read "How to Install Legacy 7.5 or earlier on a Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista computer" at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00897.

2. After updating, try Legacy again.

If Error 9 persists, please do the following:

1. If you have MS Access, open your Legacy Family file it it.

1. Start MS Access.
2. Click on File and select Open.
3. Type *.fdb in the File name field at the bottom of the window and press Enter on the keyboard. Access will now see all files with a .fdb extension.
4. Browse to the directory where the family file is saved and open it.

2. Click on Tools > Database Utilities > Compact and Repair Database. Do this twice and then close MS Access.

3. Try Legacy again.

If Error 9 persists or you don't have MS Access, please do the following:

1. Delete the following files:

LEGACY: Open your Documents folder and browse into Legacy Family Tree\ _AppData\Usr and delete the .usr files. There is no family data in any of these files, so deleting them does not delete your data. Upon start up, Legacy will recreate the files to their default settings.  Do not delete anything that does not have a .usr extension.

LEGACY 7.5 OR EARLIER: Browse into C:\Legacy folder on your hard drive and delete the .usr files, with one exception. Make sure you do NOT delete plain Legacy.usr. There is no family data in any of these files, so deleting them does not delete your data. Upon start up, Legacy will recreate the files to their default settings.  Do not delete anything that does not have a .usr extension and do not delete any of the subfolders.

You may have to turn file extensions on in Windows to be able to see these.  HERE are some instructions on how to do that.

2. Run File Maintenance and try Legacy again.

LEGACY: Please see the article "How to Check/Repair your family file - Legacy " at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00749.

LEGACY 7.5 OR EARLIER: Click on File> File Maintenance > Check/Repair and follow the prompts. If the error messages occur during the Check/Repair process, click No to continue with the repair. You can also try clicking Yes in some instances. Do step 1 twice if errors are found. After doing step 1, try Legacy again.  If the program works, you can stop here.  No further repairs are needed.

3. If the above steps fails to fix the problem, export your records into a new Legacy family file:

  1. Click on File > Export > Export to a new Legacy Family File.
  2. Give your new family file a name and click Save and the Legacy Export screen will open.
  3. Click the Privacy Options button to open the Privacy Options screen.
  4. In the lower half of the screen, under Override Private Settings, click the Check All button and then click Save.
  5. In the Legacy Export screen check mark Include general To-Do items and then click Start the Export.
  6. If the AutoSource Reminder screen opens, click the Don't Assign a Source button.
  7. The export will begin. When it's complete click OK.
  8. When asked "Would you like to open the file you just export to?" click the Yes button.
  9. Use the new family file and delete the old one when you are satisfied with the results.

4. If all else fails, restore your family file from your backup copy.

NOTE:  A user who couldn't solve Error 9 with the steps on the website wrote:

"To solve the problem I have exported my family-file into GED format for use with Legacy (there is such option - you have to know). Then in Export Options I selected to omit images/sounds/video data. Since I had only one image piece in my family-file, that omitting was not a trouble. The essential point in that solving is the choice of UTF-8 code page for  Exporting, because I'm from Russia, and we, Russians, use Cyrillic for  writing (of course you know it :). After exporting I've imported the new GED  file and added troubled picture to my family-file again."
