Error 48: This error usually means one of the installation files has been corrupted or the system registry has been corrupted. There is more than one cause for this error. Here are the most common ones:

 • Malware infections add malicious code to applications, and leftover DLL files from removed malware infections.
 • The DLL or referenced DLL is not in a directory specified in the path.
 • Hard disk error damaged a DLL file.

1. Please uninstall Legacy Family Tree 7.5 or earlier version completely. Click Here for the steps. Next re-install your Legacy program. Please visit http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00899 for the last "build" of your version.

2. If the error continues then you can try a registry repair. There are several utilities available to do this. Some cost money and some are free. We have had success with Ccleaner from Piriform. You can download the free version at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download.

Optionally visit http://download.cnet.com/Free-Window-Registry-Repair/3000-2086_4-10606555.html. This is a reputable site that also offers a program called Free Window Registry Repair. The download is free and there is a video preview that you can watch.

3. Try a Windows System Restore. For directions, please click this link: How do I do a Windows System Restore to undo changes to my computer?

If error 48 is still a problem:

1. Remove spyware from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications usually do not cover. Visit http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/ for an excellent, free spyware removal utility.

2. Try http://support.microsoft.com/fixit. Under (1) Select a problem area click "Top Solutions"; under (2) What are you trying to do? select "Fix performance, errors or crashes"; and then under (3) Click Run Now for "Fix Windows system performance problems on slow Windows computers." Follow the screen prompts and accept the defaults and choose the recommended actions. (These steps may or may not help error 48, but your overall system performance will be better.)

3. Remove/uninstall programs that you don't use/need.

4. Remove/uninstall your current antivirus program and replace it with AVG Free. Please visit http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage. In addition, if you have a firewall program, remove it and use only the Windows firewall. (We had a user recently who could not connect to the Internet in Legacy because she had 3 antivirus programs and 2 firewalls running on her system. Uninstalling the redundant security programs fixed the connectivity problem instantly.)

5. If the above steps did not work, reboot you computer in Safe Mode and try Legacy again. If Legacy runs as it should in Safe Mode then there is probably a conflict with a driver which may need updating. Consult you Windows help system for the steps to reboot in Safe Mode.
