Runtime error 53 means a file that Legacy needs for connecting to the Internet is missing or unavailable.

1. Click on Options > Customize > 11. Launch.  Reset the Alternate Web browser to use with Legacy back to the default (blank) by clicking the Change button and then click the Cancel button to close the Default Browser window.  Try the Internet again.  If it works, stop here.

If Error 53 persists:

1. Make sure you are running the latest update of Legacy.

LEGACY: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp

LEGACY 8 OR EARLIER: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00899 and download the final revision (build) of your version. You may also wish to read "How to Install Legacy 7.5 or earlier on a Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista computer" at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00897.

2. Make sure that you are connected to the internet.

3. Add Legacy.exe as an "exception" to your antivirus software and firewall. To learn how, go to the internet homepage of your antivirus program and firewall and search their help file or knowledge base for the instructions.

4. Make sure that Internet Explorer is installed (and up to date) on your computer even if you use a different browser to access the internet. Internet Explorer is automatically installed as part of Windows so it should be there.  Legacy uses Internet Explorer as its internal browser.

5. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options. Next select the Advanced tab and click the Reset button.

6. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options.  Select the Advanced tab and scroll down to Security. Check mark the box that says Allow active content to run in files on My Computer.  You will have to restart your computer for this to take effect.

7. Customize your Legacy program to always use Internet Explorer or other preferred Web browser. The Customize screen is reached by choosing Customize from the Options menu. Next click the Launch tab. In the Customize – Launch  screen set the Alternate Web Browser by clicking the Change button and specify the drive and path to the web browser you would like to use. (For example, Internet Explorer may be located at: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe). Save your changes by clicking on the Save button in the lower left corner of the screen.

8. If all else fails, uninstall and then reinstall your Web browser. If your main browsr is Internet Explorer, how you do this depends on which version of Windows you are running and which version of Internet Explorer you are using.  You can search for the instructions you need in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.  One user had Error 53 with Firefox was his main browser, which had become corrupted. The 'missing file' message was apparently related to the browser and not to Legacy. Re-installing Firefox fixed the problem.
