Error 75 is tricky because it seems to have more than one trigger. Error 75 means that Legacy does not have rights or access to a file. Often this is caused when Legacy is trying to access a network file it doesn't have proper access to either because of network privileges or something is blocking Legacy. This issue can also be caused when the family file is being used by another program or is read-only or is on a CD or DVD disc.  Here are some things that have helped other users.

•  Right-click on the Legacy icon and select Troubleshoot compatibility on the popup menu. Next click on Troubleshoot program and at the next screen click Start the program and give it permission to make changes to your computer. If Legacy works, in the Program Compatility screen click Yes to these settings for this program.

•  A fresh re-installation of Legacy often fixes Error 75 in Legacy Family Tree. Please see the article "Uninstall - how to do a complete and totally clean removal of Legacy". To do a fresh download of Legacy Family Tree Deluxe, please visit Download Legacy Deluxe for Legacy 9 or Earlier Versions to download any earlier versions of Legacy and use your Legacy customer number to unlock the deluxe features.

This re-installation process will wipe out any customized setting you have made. If you want to keep them, please see http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00983 for the steps to back them up. (Be aware that sometimes it's the customized settings that are the cause of a problem and restoring the settings may bring the problem back.)

Many users can fix errors 75 in Legacy by setting the User Account Control "Never Notify". Please visit http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00897 for more information.

If you installed Legacy 7.5 or earlier to the Program Files directory on a Windows 8 or Windows 7 computer, you should uninstall the program and then re-install it to the default C:\Legacy\ location.

Some users can open Legacy Family Tree without errors by right-clicking on the Legacy Family Tree icon and selecting Run as administrator from the popup menu.

Other users can open Legacy Family Tree indirectly by doubling-clicking on their family file. (Windows may hide the family file extension. You can identify a Legacy family file type by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties from the popup menu. A Legacy family file will show as “Legacy Genealogy Software (.fdb)” on the General tab. The icon will look like a white sheet of paper with a small red and blue shield in the center.)

Open the Legacy folder on your hard drive, and then press Ctrl + A on your keyboard to highlight all the files. Next right-click on one of the highlighted files, and then select Properties from the bottom of the popup menu. In the Properties screen uncheck Hidden attribute and click Apply and OK. Repeat this procedure for the Data folder (or whatever folder you have your family file(s) saved in.

Some Legacy users may have Internet security software (firewall, antivirus program, popup blocker, anti-spyware program, etc.) that could be one of the causes of these errors. To get around this, the makers of many of these applications have instructions for adding programs like Legacy to an "Allowed" or "Trusted" or "Exception" or "Authorized" or "Ignore" list.

With Legacy closed, go into your start menu and type in Controlled Folder Access and click on the Controlled Folder Access option that comes up.  If it says you do not have permissions, stop here as it is not active.  If it opens the Controlled Folder Access menu, please disable this feature.
