In Legacy, click on Options on the menu and select Customize. Next click on the Locations tab and then click the Reset button for "Location of temporary files." This should fix error 76.

If it does not fix error 76, a clean re-installation of Legacy might. A clean re-installation can be done safely following these steps:

1. Uninstall Legacy.

Legacy:  please visit http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00677

VERSION 8 & EARLIER: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00682

2. Update your Legacy program.

LEGACY: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp

LEGACY 8 OR EARLIER: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00899 and download the final release (build) of your version. You may also wish to read "How to Install Legacy 7.5 or earlier on a Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista computer" at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00897.

3. Legacy 7.5 and earlier should only be installed to C:\Legacy. Sometimes we have users who want to install Legacy 7.5 or earlier on and external drive or to C:\Program Files\Legacy. When they experience problems they have to uninstall and re-install to C:\Legacy.

Legacy should be installed to the default C:\Program Files\Legacy (Windows 32-bit) or C:\Program Files (x86)\Legacy (Windows 64-bit) computers.

When you download, please keep in mind that, many Legacy users have Internet security software (firewall, antivirus program, popup blocker, anti-spyware program, etc.) that blocks Legacy. (Some of the programs that will block Legacy include programs made by Kaspersky, McAfee, and Trend Micro, etc. These anti-virus programs actually contain spyware, adware and dialers. ) To get around this, the makers of many of these applications have instructions for adding programs like Legacy to an "Allowed" or "Trusted" or “Exception” or “Authorized”  list, etc. Please make sure that Legacy is added.

4. Click on Options > Customize > Locations and then click the Reset button for "Location of temporary files."

If this problem occurs in Legacy 8 when prompted to update to Legacy 9 please do the following:

This error normally means there is something on your computer blocking Legacy from performing an action and that is what is causing the error and the crash.  It may be a security setting from your anti-virus/security software or it may be a lack of permissions in your administrator settings for Legacy.

First try disabling all anti-virus/security software and try Legacy again.  If the problem still occurs close Legacy, make sure you are logged into your computer as administrator and browse to C-Drive>Program Files(X86)>Legacy8 and in the Legacy folder you should see the Legacy application.  Right click the application and choose properties.  In the properties menu in the compatibility tab set Legacy to always run as administrator.  Now try Legacy again.  Does the problem still occur?
