1. Make sure that your Windows operating system has all Service Packs installed. Use the Windows Update tool in the Control Panel.

2. Some users with Error 91 have discovered that the DAO360.DLL file was missing from the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder (for 64-bit computers) or the C:\Windows\System32 folder (for 32-bit computers). Copying DAO360.DLL from the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\DAO folder into the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder and the C:\Windows\System32 folder fixed the problem. Make sure Legacy is closed when you do this and your computer will probably ask for Administrative approval, so give it.  For most users, Legacy Family Tree and Legacy FamilySearch will work at this point, so stop here. You are done.

3. Disable all other programs that may be running in the background (anti-virus, download managers, Instant Messengers, etc.), then update your Legacy program.

LEGACY: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp

LEGACY 8 OR EARLIER: http://legacyfamilytree.host4kb.com/article/AA-00899 and download the final revision (build) of your version.

4. Reset Legacy’s temporary folder by clicking on Options > Customize > Locations. Next, click the Reset button for the Location of Temporary File.

5. Run File Maintenance.

LEGACY: "How to Check/Repair your family file - Legacy" at http://legacyfamilytree.host4kb.com/article/AA-00749.  If you cannot open your file in Legacy try opening the sample file that comes with Legacy (located at Documents>Legacy Family Tree>Data) and then go to file>close file to close the family file but keep Legacy open.  From here go to file>file maintenance>check/repair and in the following browse window browse to your file.

LEGACY 8 AND EARLIER: Run File Maintenance - Check/Repair.  Click on File> File Maintenance > Check/Repair and follow the prompts. If any error messages occur during the Check/Repair process, click No to continue with the repair. Do step 1 twice if errors are found.  For additional information, see "Check and Repair Family File" in the Legacy program's Help file.

6. After doing steps 1 and 2, try Legacy again.  If the program works, you can stop here.  No further repairs are needed.

7.  If the above steps fails to fix the problem, export your records into a new Legacy family file:

  1. Click on File > Export > Export to a new Legacy Family File.
  2. Give your new family file a name and click Save and the Legacy Export screen will open.
  3. Click the Privacy Options button to open the Privacy Options screen. (For Legacy 7.5 and earlier select the Privacy tab.)
  4. In the lower half of the screen, under Override Private Settings, click the Check All button and then click Save.
  5. In the Legacy Export screen check mark Include general To-Do items and then click Start the Export.
  6. If the AutoSource Reminder screen opens, click the Don't Assign a Source button.
  7. The export will begin. When it's complete click OK.
  8. When asked "Would you like to open the file you just export to?" click the Yes button.
  9. Use the new family file and delete the old one when you are satisfied with the results.

Try Legacy again. It should run without error 91. If it still gives error 91 try the repair steps for crashing and freezing at Legacy Freezes or Hangs
