Various LEAD Errors are reported from time to time. For example: LEAD Errors 20001, 20002, 20009, etc. or "Not enough memory available", or "Invalid height/width", or "Invalid bitmap handle", etc. They are easy to fix once you identify the picture or pictures that cause the problem.

1. With Legacy closed, find the photo(s) that trigger the LEAD Error.

2. Try these steps in a photo editing program to fix the photos:

1. Resize the photos to make them smaller. For example, a picture saved with 11 x 14 dimensions should be reduced in size, which will result in a smaller file size.
2. If the photos are TIFFs, try saving them as JPGs, which have smaller file sizes.
3. If the pictures have LZW compression, try unchecking the option when saving. This sometimes makes a difference but is not usually a problem.
4. If possible, rescan the image. This might help if the picture file is damaged.
5. When saving the photos uncheck the ICC Profile option.
The left screen shot below shows the Corel photo editor and the right screen shot shows Adobe Photoshop. Your program may look different so check its Help system if you have a question.

Open Legacy and try the pictures again. If you change their format (step 2) or renamed them you will have to reattach them.

Sometimes LEAD Errors can be fixed by re-installing Legacy.

Before you do anything, backup your file to a flash drive or other safe location.

1. Close Legacy and delete the following files:

LEGACY: Open your Documents folder and browse into Legacy Family Tree\ _AppData\Usr and delete the Legacy2.usr, Legacy5.usr, Legacy6.usr, Legacy7.usr Legacy8.usr, and Legacy9.usr files (make sure you do not delete plain Legacy.usr). There is no family data in any of these files, so deleting them does not delete your data. Upon start up, Legacy will recreate the files to their default settings.

LEGACY: Also delete the Legacy.exe file

for 32-bit WINDOWS COMPUTERS go to C:\Program Files\Legacy
for 64-bit WINDOWS COMPUTERS go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Legacy

LEGACY 7.5 OR EARLIER: browse into C:\Legacy folder on your hard drive and delete the Legacy2.usr, Legacy5.usr, Legacy6.usr, Legacy7.usr and Legacy8.usr files (make sure you do not delete plain Legacy.usr). There is no family data in any of these files, so deleting them does not delete your data. Upon start up, Legacy will recreate the files to their default settings. DO NOT delete any of the folders like the Data folder, Picture Folder or Web Folder as these folders hold your data and you don't want to accidentally delete your family file or pictures. Don't delete the Legacy*.lic file.  All the other files should be deleted.

LEGACY 7.5 OR EARLIER: Also delete the Legacy.exe file from the C:\Legacy folder.

2. Re-install Legacy Family Tree:

LEGACY 7.5 OR EARLIER: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00899 and download the final release (build) of your version.
