"I created a GEDCOM file but don't know where it was saved."

To find the GEDCOM file you just made, return to the 'Export GEDCOM File' screen, which will show you where the file is stored.

  1. Click on File > Export To > GEDCOM File.
  2. Click the 'Select File Name and START EXPORT' button. The 'Export GEDCOM File' screen will open.
  3. Look at the top of the screen. It will show you where the file was created. It will show something like 'Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Legacy > Data' or maybe 'Libraries > Documents' or 'Desktop' or whatever. You will know you are in the right place because you will see the GEDCOM file you just made.
  4. Make note of the location.
  5. Click the 'Cancel' button to exit without taking further action.

You can also use Legacy's Import Wizard to automatically search for GEDCOM files.

  1. Click on File > Import From > 'Use Import Wizard to help with any import'.
  2. At the first screen select 'A program (via GEDCOM)' and click 'Next Step'.
  3. At the next screen select 'I do not know where the file is stored on my computer. Let Legacy create a list of files to choose from' and click 'Next Step'. Legacy will begin atomically searching your computer for GEDCOM files.
  4. When Legacy is finished searching, find your GEDCOM file in the list and make note of the location.
  5. Click on 'Exit Setup' to exit without taking further action.

If you cannot locate your GEDCOM file using the above methods, use the Search feature in Windows to find your GEDCOM file with a wildcard search.

  1. First close Legacy.
  2. Next, click on the round start button in the lower left corner of your Desktop screen.
  3. In the "Search programs and files" field (right above the round start button) type *.GED and press Enter on your keyboard.
  4. When Windows is finished searching, find your GEDCOM file in the list and make note of the location.
  5. If no items match your search, click on "See more results" and select Computer.
  6. When Windows finds your lost GEDCOM file, make note of its location.
