If you get error 3191 when converting a family file in Legacy there are some different approaches you can try.

• Repeatedly click Yes in the error message box

1. Click Yes in the Error 3191 message box. If error 3191 repeats, keep clicking Yes and it will eventually stop. (You can also try No.) The chances are very good that the file will convert and open.

2. Next, run Check/Repair.  Click on File> File Maintenance > Check/Repair and follow the prompts. If the error messages occur during the Check/Repair process, this time click No to continue with the repair. You can also try clicking Yes.  Either Yes or No may work.  Do step 2 twice if errors are found. Click Here for more information.

• If you have Legacy 7.5 and are converting to a new version, start over in Legacy 7.5 and check and repair the family file first before opening/converting it to a newer version of Legacy.

1. Close the newer version of Legacy and open Legacy 7.5.

2. Click on File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair and follow the prompts. If any error messages occur during the Check/Repair process, click No to continue with the repair. Do these steps twice if errors are found.

3. Close Legacy 7.5 and open the newer version of Legacy.

4. Delete file with the error 3191 error by clicking on File > Delete File and then confirming the delete.  The file will be sent into the Recycle Bin.

5. Find and convert the Legacy 7.5 file you just repaired.  See http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00634.

• Start over in Legacy 7.5 and export a GEDCOM file for import into the newer version of Legacy.

1. Close the newer version of Legacy and open Legacy 7.5. Next check and repair your family file (see step 2 above).

2. Next, export all the records into a GEDCOM file and then import the GEDCOM back into Legacy as a new family file.

   1) Click on File  > Export > GEDCOM File. The GEDCOM Export window appears.
   2) In the Produce file for: box, select Legacy (this is the default. It should already be selected.).
   3) Click the Privacy Options tab to open the Privacy Options screen.
   4) In the lower half of the screen, under Override Private Settings, click the Check All button.
   5) Switch back to the first screen and click the Select File Name and START EXPORT button. Give the GEDCOM file a name and click Save.

3. When the export is finished, close Legacy 7.5 and open the newer version of Legacy. Import the GEDCOM into Legacy as a new family file. Click on File > Import From > GEDCOM File and follow the prompts.

4. Delete file with the error 3191 error by clicking on File > Delete File and then confirming the delete.  The file will be sent into the Recycle Bin.

5. The GEDCOM export-import method will fix several errors that the check and repair process can't handle. However, any SourceWriter sources in Legacy 7.5 will be converted to Basic sources in the GEDCOM. If you have SourceWriter sources in your Legacy 7.5 file do the GEDCOM export-import method as a last resort.
