[Picture or media file name] was not found within the media subdirectories:

Pictures, sound, video, or document files are missing. When you import information from a GEDCOM, PAF or Legacy file from a different computer containing references to picture, sound, and video files, Legacy needs to know where they are located on the new computer. Most of the time, when you receive a GEDCOM from another person, the multimedia files do not accompany it. Ask the person to send a multimedia backup, which you can restore all the pictures from.

You can also get this warning message when picture, sound or video files have been moved, deleted or renamed. If the files have been moved then use the Media Relinker to automatically find all your pictures and other media files and fix the links.

The Media Relinker can be reached from several different places in the program.  The most obvious place is on the Tools tab of the Ribbon bar.   You can also start the Relinker from any Media Gallery by clicking on the Options button and then choosing Media Relinker.  The Relinker is also available from the Find File window that pops up when a media file can't be found.

When the Media Relinker first starts, the first thing it needs to do is to collect the names and locations of every media file on your computer.   This can take a few minutes and a progress bar is displayed to show you how long it will take.  If Legacy has already collected all these file names you will be asked if you want to use this list.  If you have not moved anything since the last list was made, click Yes to use it.  If anything has changed, for example if you have renamed any files or moved any to new locations, click No and Legacy will rebuild the list.

After the global media list is built, Legacy then checks all of your media links in the current family file.

If Everything is Fine

If all of your links are valid, meaning that the linked file is found where it should be, then you are finished - nothing else needs to be done.

If Something is Unlinked

When Legacy finds a file that is not in its original location, it looks for a matching file name in the global media list.  If only one matching file name is found, the link is changed to point to that file.  If Legacy finds two or more files in the global media list with the same name as the unlinked file, the Select a Picture window is opened.
